What is a valuable item?

Valuables can include:

  • Articles made from, or containing, gold, silver and other precious metals or stones
  • Jewellery (including costume jewellery)
  • Watches
  • Cameras or camcorders where the main function is to take photos or video recordings
  • Telescopes
  • Binoculars
  • Clocks
  • Barometers
  • Furs
  • Works of art

Here at Policy Expert, we ask you to choose a cover limit for all your valuables that are individually worth £2,000 or less. When considering if your cover limit for valuable items is sufficient, it is important to bear in mind all of the examples above.

Please also note that within our application for insurance we ask if you have any valuable items individually worth over £2,000. It is important that these are correctly declared to us. If you don’t, it won’t be covered if you need to claim.

Get valuables professionally valued every couple of years. Prices can go up as well as down. If the cost of replacing your item exceeds what’s in your policy, it also won’t be covered.

Always make sure the valuation covers the cost of anything being fully replaced. We won’t cover the gold weight cost.

Bought something nice abroad? Remember to get it valued for what it would cost to replace back here in the UK, not what you bought it for.
